Texas Virtual School Network (TxVSN)

Texas Virtual School Network

The 80th Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 1788, authorizing the Texas Education Agency to establish and administer a state virtual school network to provide education to students through electronic means. An electronic course is defined as a course in which instruction and content are delivered primarily over the Internet; a student and teacher are in different locations for a majority of the student's instructional period; most instructional activities take place in an online environment; the online instructional activities are integral to the academic program; extensive communication between a student and a teacher and among students is emphasized; and a student is not required to be located on the physical premises of a school district or open-enrollment charter school.

The courses that are available on TxVSN go through a rigorous approval process to make sure that they meet the content TEKS and the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL) standards for quality courses. Additionally, each course that is available on TxVSN is taught by a highly qualified teacher so the receiving district can award credit for the courses.

As well as the rigorous approval process that courses must go through prior to being available on the TxVSN, ALL instructors must complete a TxVSN approved professional development course to understand what good quality online instruction involves. While the teachers may be master classroom teachers, there are online teaching practices to consider when transferring instruction into the online environment. These professional development courses address online pedagogy and practices.

Region 16 Education Service Center is now an approved TxVSN Professional Development Provider. Upon completion of WICC I, you will be certified to teach online courses in the TxVSN catalog.

The Web Instructor's Certification Course I (WICC I) will be scheduled to begin September 7, 2010. Minimum of ten. Follow the link above to register.
