Texas Support for Homeless Education Program Estimates by the Texas Homeless Education Office (THEO) suggest that there are as many as 200,000 school-age children and youth experiencing homelessness in Texas. These are children who, at night, are in any of the circumstances outlined below: · sleep in shelters for homeless people (including domestic violence and runaway youth shelters); · sleep in the home of relatives or friends because they lack a fixed, regular, and adequate residence; · sleep in shelters awaiting foster care, adoption, or other permanent placement; or · sleep in a car, a tent, an abandoned building, or other place not ordinarily used as a sleeping accommodation for human beings. The overall purpose of this grant will be to increase identification, promote prompt enrollment, provide needed services, and increase academic success of students in homeless situations to the members of the TEXSHEP Grant SSA and school districts in Region 16 ESC.
