Alternative Certification Program

Welcome,

Region 16 Education Service Center is providing professional (Counselor, Principal and Superintendent) certification programs online in partnership with Region 4 Education Service Center. The Region 4 Principal Certification program is approved by the State Board of Education (SBEC)/Texas Education Agency (TEA). Additional information regarding program approval and administrative credentials in the state of Texas can be found at the SBEC website at www.tea.texas.gov. Program rules and requirements are subject to change at any time due to SBEC requirements.

The program is an alternative certification program designed for teachers and principals who meet certain minimum criteria to obtain professional certification through plans approved by the state of Texas and is considered an “alternative” route because it accomplishes certification outside the traditional university program setting. The program consists of a 12 month online curriculum along with 160 hours of campus/district level practicum experiences. All courses are instructor led and the practicum is conducted under the supervision of a campus/district mentor and an assigned field supervisor.

Instructional Leadership Development (ILD) certification is included as a part of the principal program. Course work and internship can be conducted anywhere in the state of Texas. After all program requirements are complete, including all course work, practicum hours and passing of the TExES exam, the intern will be recommended to the state for a standard certification.
