At Region 16, exceptional service isn’t just about solving problems—it’s about truly seeing people. Chris Fant, Counselor and Mental Health Specialist, exemplifies this kind of service every day through his deep empathy, strong leadership, and unwavering commitment to supporting students, staff, and fellow counselors.
Chris’s path to education wasn’t traditional—but it was purposeful. What began as a passion for math evolved into a calling to serve others, first through mission work in Russia and later as a high school teacher. A defining moment came when a student’s emotional struggle inspired Chris to shift from instruction to connection. He returned to school, earned his master’s in counseling, and spent 10 years at Canyon High helping students navigate life’s challenges.
Now at Region 16, Chris plays a vital role on the counseling and mental health team. His focus includes mental health training, crisis response, and—most notably—supporting academic advising efforts across seven school districts. From helping refine transcript practices to guiding students toward post-secondary opportunities, Chris is instrumental in building systems that help others thrive.
“I’ve always just really enjoyed serving others and feeling like I made a positive difference,” Chris shared. “It gives me a lot of joy when a counselor comes to me with an issue and I can use my knowledge to help. I want to be that support for others so they can better serve students.”
Khara Skidgel, Coordinator of Tiered Services, praised Chris’s impact on the team:
“Chris doesn’t just meet expectations; he redefines them! His dedication and creative problem-solving have been a game-changer, and the team is stronger because of him.”
Chris’s story is a powerful reminder that great service starts with heart—and that when someone combines passion with purpose, the result is transformative for everyone involved.
