ever wonder how fruits and vegetables make it from the fields to your table the odds are good that a migrant worker had a hand in this process there between 1 and 3 million migrant workers in the US they work when the weather allows and often times travel from one area of harvest to Anna these workers regularly put in 12 to 14-hour days of physical labor and are paid by the peace now by the hour resulting in the making less than the minimum wage they come from all over the Us and other parts of the world the majority being of Hispanic descent while the typical migrant worker is a young male averaging 31 years of age women children in the older generation are also counted in their numbers this group of people has a strong work ethic despite difficult conditions why do they do this difficult work hope they're dedicated to their families and want to provide Bright Futures for their children the migrant population faces a number of obstacles including lack of English proficiency High rates of illiteracy extremely low education prevalent poverty limited reliable transportation back and political power intense fear and lack of trust in government institutions and isolation in rural areas there between two hundred thousand three hundred thousand migrant workers in Texas an estimated 100,000 migrant children the CDC states the agriculture ranks among the most hazardous Industries risk of fatal and nonfatal injuries to families runs high these risks include work related lung diseases noise-induced hearing loss disorders in certain cancers related to the chemicals used and prolonged sun exposure imagine hauling two tons of tomatoes in a day just to make the same wages You Did In 1978 at the end of that long day you didn't return to substandard housing conditions which are off an overcrowded and lack proper heating cooling and plumbing facilities migrant workers moved frequently many times with no pre-arranged job or housing for migrant students this means constantly leaving schools Townsend friends and having to start over these my students not only face the typical travails of childhood and Adolescence but they also face several additional challenges they often work alongside their parents in the fields facing the same dangers however since the children are still growing and developing these dangers can have even more of an effect heat exhaustion dehydration and the repetitive nature of the work can all have lasting detrimental effects on these children if they are not in the fields working with their parents these children are often at home with little or no supervision there is some services available to migrant workers Nerf am but several barriers to keep them from the services these barriers include lacking a permanent address or living in a small rural community with no public transportation available and limited English many of these parents are not the importance of early childhood development region 16 has over 1,600 migrant students with nearly nine hundred of them in our SSA these migrant workers work with crops such as corn we Milo peanuts pumpkins watermelons cotton app play beans and sunflowers beef cattle or dairy cattle and Hog Farms are also agricultural work that sometimes use migrant workers and seasonal or temporary positions are students not only migrate all across Texas but they also move across our nation to locations including California Colorado Arizona Florida-Georgia Maryland Michigan and a host of other states all my students are able to participate in the free lunch program at school once their eligibility has been determined because my current students are Playmobil all of their school information is stored in the new generation system in GPS system keeps track of their moves and will a secondary credits State assessment results and health and immunization information the title 1 part C minor educate program or meth is federally funded and provides funds to school districts to assist in meeting the local needs and my grandchildren required activities include year-round identification and recruitment of Migrant children as well as training for my 3 and 4 year olds and their parents the mat provides opportunities for parent involvement along with remediation for students who are most at risk for not being successful in school region 16 SSA provides nvs data entry counselors 28 students in College and Career readiness Meijer interventionist to help students with academic deficits Middle School and High School leadership conferences health and safety day for elementary students Washington d.c. experience for selected high school students college tours for high school plus other additional Services now that you have a better understanding about migrant students we hope you'll join us in serving them and helping them achieve their best possible future
