listen to Danielle and this is Winston and you're listening to unlocking potential special education perspectives or region 16 podcast hello everyone and welcome to today's episode of unlocking potential we're joined by behavioral Consulting Brandy called out today welcome Brandi thank you for joining us on the podcast good afternoon I'm so excited to be here to have you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background an education and your role at the service center okay so I started out my education career I'm at the high school level in those eight years I was at work in the inclusion setting resource setting as well as the like still sitting and so then I jumped ship and then I went to the elementary level and in those nine years I did I worked as a resource math as well as inclusion worn a lot of hats while you've been in special education all that means you bring a lot of experience to the table what's we all appreciate so you've been in high demand since you started here at the service center and last year many schools and teachers have requested support with behavior why do you think we've seen such an increase and the need for Behavioral support one of the students that are coming into schools they're missing this this skills such as social skills and when they're missing social skills teachers have expectations that students should know how to do something but they're missing those skills in a lot of the missing social skills has a lot to do with the family Dynamics it also has to do with social media and so whenever you look at social media it's not always appropriate for media like the YouTubers you know they get attention and they're I'm popular because they're funny and sometimes we see it as funny but it's really kind of rude and it's inappropriate behaviors and so then our students are in it and they bring it to school and so there's some of that but anything I think it's students are just they're just missing the social skills and it's not being taught by family or just missing lots of the Caribbean and not necessarily ignore their just not there's not a lot of attention. you're not being trained or taught skills in the at home about lack of communication skill I think to you know where I'm at and we're all guilty of it we're just on our devices are doing things we're not interacting as much I think so. I feel like probably contributes to some of that lack of and their social ability as well probably so what are some of the most frequently asked questions that you get from teachers when you go into the classrooms to you help support them the Hot Topic this year is my student is eloping and so we have a lot of students were eloping out of the classroom and they're just escaping they're running and so what the teachers ask what do I do to keep the student in the classroom another question is students who are disrupting or they're not turning in work and I'm so with the disruption kids are just really struggle to complete tasks I'm so they have avoided behaviors by interrupting and just being off task and trying to get other peers off task and that is a lot of what we're saying oh and I'm thinking this is something Heidi Breuer and I talked about a lot is that lack of like executive functioning skills and just be a lot of like impulsiva T task initiation you know and things like that and the inability to to be organized and eating out like you were saying earlier it's important that we teach that we assume kids and know this goes but sometimes they don't and so we have to go back in and teach those skills and maybe in a unique way for that specific students so what tips do you have for teachers when supporting their students and transitioning back to school after the holiday break cuz that's coming up cuz they're going to be out for several weeks and then we know that that them coming back can sometimes be a challenge I like starting what are some tips for teachers well I think that you got to take a step back and you got to realize these kiddos have got to stay up late and no bedtime they have a bite to eat when I wanted to and so they have been without structure so coming in keep in mind you have to give lots of Grace but you have to go back through and you have to teach the structure you have to teach the expectations what does it look like when we walk down the hall does it look like whenever I give a callback what does it look like when we turn in a worksheet you have to give all your you have to show at the model and it's okay that first week when you come back if you practice practice practice because sometimes you have to go slow to go fast that's a great piece of advice just thinking about students in general behaviors I know you and I talked about this a lot how important do you think that building relationships with students is I'm as far as contributing to behaviors on the car relationship is the key to everything you you have to build the foundation of your relationship with your student before any kind of learning goes line and just a little reminder students need touch they need 9 touches that high five side hugs just elbow bump any kind of touch but the students who were that you struggle with the most they need probably more than nine touches and always make sure that you use their name in a positive way that's all something that you know whenever we have a we feel like there's a lot of correction that we needed to do in our classroom but give a shout out to the ones who are doing it correctly and that's model of what you're expecting and so the stew this will look at who is doing doing the expectation correctly and said that keeps you from having to feel like you're always correcting that one student who always struggles but going back to a relationship that is your main thing and always keep in mind whenever the student does have a stroke I struggle the day before that every day's a new day and don't hold the date the previous day over their head and greet them with a smile and give them aside and let them know that you were so glad that they came back to your class the next day I left I don't think those are all great pieces of advice for transitioning back in January and welcoming our kids back from their long break oh thank you so much Brandy for joining me today on the podcast and if you have questions or you need for their behavior support please feel free to reach out to Brandi Caldwell we will put her contact information within the show notes email address some things so that if you need further support in this area you can reach out to her thank you so much for thank you for having me
